Postdoctoral Research Associate / Research Fellow – Fruit Fly – Functional Genomics of the
Nervous System, University of Sydney, Australia
• Join an exciting multidisciplinary effort to functionally annotate the conserved genome
• Full-time fixed term for two years (with potential for renewal) remuneration $90k – $121k
p.a. plus leave loading and up to 17% superannuation (106 -$143k p.a total)
We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the John and Anne Chong
Lab for Functional Genomics lead by Associate Professor Greg Neely
(http://sydney.edu.au/science/people/greg.neely.php). The position will be based within the Charles
Perkins Centre at University of Sydney, a rich academic environment focused on a multidisciplinary
approach to improving human health as we age.
There are multiple ongoing projects available to the
successful candidate, focused on either basic science
or towards improving disease treatment. We use
various model systems in the lab, including fruit flies,
mice, and human ES cells and stem cell-derived
organoids combined with high throughput or
candidate genome editing. Over the last 5 years we
have identified new unpublished conserved pathways
primarily affecting neuronal development, neuron
function, synaptic output, taste perception, or more
medically relevant parameters including pain
perception, neurodegeneration, age-related cognitive decline, and extension of overall lifespan. The
successful candidate will continue work characterizing one of these functional data sets in detail, with
a focus on defining the molecular mechanisms involved and driving the selected project to
completion. The position will be for two years initially with the potential for renewal, and there is
adequate funding and freedom within the lab to allow the successful applicant to follow the project
in any direction necessary.
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who has:
• A recent PhD in biological or medical science or
similar
• A strong publication record
• Ability to integrate published literature with novel
concepts and original thought
• Extensive experience employing molecular biology,
genetics, cell biology, or behavioral neuroscience
• Be open to learning new techniques as the project
evolves.
The successful candidate will also gain experience mentoring students, and will be trained in grant
writing and encouraged to seek independent funding over the course of the fellowship.
